DUCK

Name given to a variety of species in the family Anatidae. They are waterfowl, smaller than their relatives the swans and geese, and can be found in both fresh and salt water. There are numerous species, most of which are migratory.

Most ducks have a long, broad beak used for digging. Ducks have a diverse diet; they can eat weeds, aquatic plants, fish, insects, small amphibians, worms and small molluscs.

Many ducks are unable to fly during their prey. During the molt, they retreat to protected environments where there is plenty of food for them. Usually, the molt occurs before the start of migration.

Diving ducks (Aythyinae) and sea ducks feed underwater. In order to dive more easily, they are heavier than other duck breeds, even though it is more difficult for them to fly.

Ducks of the subfamily Anatinae (a breed that also includes the mallard) feed at the surface, although they can also catch other underwater creatures, as long as they can reach them with their necks without sinking completely.

Even though they have small beaks, some more specialized ducks can also swallow large fish.
